Project management is an essential skill for most people in many areas of business and management, and is especially useful for new graduates trying to establish themselves in their careers. Project management is a competence area that is supported in business by the award of professional certifications, such as the Project Management Professional (PMP) awarded by the US-based Project Management Institute, and others such as Prince2 and IPMA. Graduating students in business, management, software engineering, and other professional areas can greatly benefit from having some theoretical knowledge and practical experience in this important area. This paper is targeted at providing introductory knowledge and building hands-on skills about the use of project management tools in business, and is complementary to many business subject areas, such as marketing, accounting, manufacturing and communications. This knowledge and experience about project management is of particular relevance to students who, after graduation, will be working intensively in IT support and implementation, or in other major project-based environments.

The paper includes a variety of teaching approaches, all designed to support a practical, real-world orientation; knowledge snippets, readings, tutorial videos, frequent case studies, and hands-on software tutorials. There will be one two-hour session every week. Questions and discussions during online sessions are strongly encouraged. You are expected to take responsibility for your own learning, with support from the instructors.

Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org) has great resources including white papers, case studies, and tools for managing projects. Some of these resources are free and some can be availed with a student membership. The student membership of PMI is available for 50 NZD. The membership is not required for this paper. However, it is recommended if you are aiming for the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) exam. I also recommend this membership if you are planning your future in project or supply chain management. Membership comes with free access to PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), which is a good replacement for the required book for this paper ( you can replace Paul Sanghera's book with PMBOK, as required reading is based on PMBOK).
